"Assault weapon" is an ambiguous term that can be used to ban anything. Automatic weapons are already banned. Further restrictions at this point won't keep guns out of the hands of anyone determined to own one when anyone can set up a plug-and-play rifle/pistol factory in their home for less than $2k. In addition, the supreme Court has ruled that police have no duty to stop crime in progress. They can camp outside of your house, wait for a burglar to rape and murder you and then leave, and then go in to collect evidence while doing nothing to protect you. See recent mass shootings (parkland Las Vegas etc) for examples of cops doing nothing to stop the carnage.
