Let's Be Space Nazis: The Missed Opportunity of Killzone 3

I mean, I think a problem here is that portraying Germans as clamouring to support Nazism and falling for propaganda isn't an accurate depiction of the actual events - Nazi leadership was secured through subversion of the political system, while they did have some popular support it certainly wasn't overwhelming. Like I mentioned elsewhere, every time the National Socialists ran in a free election, significantly more Germans voted for one of the two major Socialist parties. A more accurate depiction of how the Nazis seized power would be a narrative involving on the street paramilitary, targeted assassinations, and various forms of legal and political subterfuge.

Sure, there was a vocal minority that explicitly supported the violent ends of the Nazi ideology, but they weren't representative of the views of the average German citizen. For the masses it was much more likely to be a question of fear or self-interested complacency, not being suckered in by propaganda.

I also don't know know what you mean by suggesting all such NPCs would die during the invasion of Germany - on the German side, casualties were only estimated at around 400,000. That's not totally insignificant, but compared to something like Barbarossa, it's a drop in the bucket.

I don't think anyone would sympathize at all with the nazis, I think most players are just going to spend the rest of the game wondering "just what were the germans thinking?".

I think you're missing the point of this discussion completely - the person I was responding was specifically advocating a narrative in which the Nazis are presented in a sympathetic light at the point of their rise to power. That's what I considered whitewashing. If you're just asking me what I think about a game set in a realistic portrayal of the Weimar Republic, I'm all for it.
