Letter my friend wrote in response to Enterprise Rent-A-Car®‎ in Denver wrongfully charging another friend $500 for hail damage to her rental. CBS in Denver will be interviewing them tomorrow morning.

It sounds like this is happening to a lot, if not all of the customers who rented in Denver this last weekend. My friend was charged $500 for the "damage." Here's the letter, typed out:

"Dear Enterprise,

Last weekend, May 6-9, 2016, my good friend rented a car from your store on 22nd and Broadway in Denver, Colorado to drive to Telluride, Colorado to visit her boyfriend. She left Friday morning and returned Monday evening.

During this time, there was quite the storm back here in Denver, some 330 miles away from where she was; this storm consisted of tornadoes, hail, heavy rain, lightning, and very loud thunder. She had heard about this storm on the news, but was unable to witness it herself, because like I said previously, she was in Telluride. 330 miles away.

Monday night, we returned the car to Enterprise on 22nd and Broadway, dropped off the key, and went home. Tuesday morning, May 10th, she received a call that Enterprise would be charging her $500 for hail damage done to the car. Wait…what? How did this car have hail damage from the storm in Denver this weekend, where, again, I need to point out, that she was 330 miles away in Telluride, Colorado. I looked at the Telluride weather reports, and the weather was a beautiful Colorado weekend with lots of sunshine, and very limited precipitation, but nowhere did I read anything about HAIL!

I went with my friend to this Enterprise location to scope out the damage, took pictures, and saw no damage what so ever. I would like you to know that I have 20/20 vision, which is pilot qualified, some of the best in the entire world, and I didn’t spot a single dent, let alone chipped paint anywhere on this pretty red Toyota where they said hail damage had occurred.

I went inside to request a manager. Inside I observed every person working in this store on the phone with angry customers, having the same conversation they had with my friend in regards to hail damage. Oddly enough, this made me feel better, that we were not the only angry customers, but everyone who rented a car from you this weekend was an angry customer.

A manager escorted us out to the damaged car, where I asked him to point out the hail damage that they were claiming. As I watched this young man bend and stretch is body every which angle, as if he was working on the newest yoga move, it was obvious he was unable to see said hail damage. When I asked him to point out the damage to me, our conversation went like this:

Enterprise: “You must have a very trained eye in order to see the hail damage, you won’t be able to see it with your untrained eyes”

Me: “Where does one go to get these trained expert eyes?”

Enterprise: “We go through an intense annual training every year, specifically directed at assessing hail damage”

Me: “Oh, okay, what is the name of the school where this training is held?”

Enterprise: “Well…it isn’t a school.”

Me: “Oh, what is the course called?”

Enterprise: “It isn’t a course, it is our regional manager”

He then gestures to me to come bend my body into a pretzel to get the right angle to see the damage. I am sorry, but I haven’t done yoga in a while, and my body hasn’t been able to bend that way since I was 20 years old.

I have always enjoyed your slogan of “Enterprise, we’ll pick you up!” However, I can’t help but feel in this situation your slogan should be changed to “Enterprise, we’ll pick your pocket”.

Sincerely,

The Untrained Eye

TL;DR: Enterprise Rent-A-Car®‎ in Denver charged my friend $500 for hail damage to the car she rented... and drove 300 miles away from Denver during the hailstorm. She has all necessary proof to fight this. CBS in Denver is investigating / interviewing her tomorrow.
