I get what you're saying. You have a point, but I also think that this person who killed her will only ever hurt other people and make more victims. How can any society tolerate that risk? Susan should have been able to sleep through that night and wake up the next morning to a beautiful day, but some person chose to take that day and all the days to follow away from her. How has he or she not forfeited the rest of their days through that act? Handing over punishment to the state is something that takes away retribution and revenge from the families and friends of victims in the interests of a more just society, but it seems to fall far short of balancing the scales so often. I wish there was some kind of island or even another planet we could send people to when they do something so horrible... some place where they could no longer turn others into their victims. Some individuals are just so very toxic that the rest of the world needs protection from them, and usually, law enforcement cannot provide that protection until it is too late.
