Life without parole

I am sorry to hear that your mom is doing life in Florida. I did some time in Florida so I’m somewhat familiar with how things work. I can tell you that with the governor and the legislature we have now, getting something like that through is a long shot, and having existing sentences grandfathered in is an even longer shot. Just this year the governor denied clemency to all those with murder charges and sexual offenses without even looking at them. Take your lawyer’s advice, but keep in mind that as long as he or she gives you hope you keep giving him or her money. During my years in the system I did not see a single person get out early, including my amazing law librarian friend who helped change the ridiculous drug trafficking laws (she was not grandfathered in.) I know this is not what you want to hear, and I would never discourage you from activism because the prison system as a whole is broken in Florida, but also be realistic. Send her money for canteen and clothes packages, advocate for her medical issues if any, and visit her when you can. Again, I’m sorry you are going through this and I wish you the best.
