Like it or not, cyclists have a right to the road, whether there is a bike lane or not

Okay, but the situation I'm describing is entirely the fault of the driver. As I said, "...while I'm legally crossing the street"--a pedestrian randomly running into oncoming traffic is another matter. The onus is on the driver to stop at a red light and wait for any pedestrians to cross the street before they turn. Whether or not the pedestrian is "darting" into the intersection is irrelevant--once the walk sign is on, they have the right-of-way. If you're attempting a right-turn-on-red and a car drives past on a green light, would you complain about them getting in your way and "darting" into the intersection? Now, obviously good pedestrian etiquette is to look for any approaching traffic and if necessary make eye contact with the driver and otherwise make themselves visible while crossing, but it's on the owner of the two-ton speed machine to make sure there aren't any pedestrians around before they turn.
