LinkNYC just went up at 125th St and 3rd Avenue.

Running a linux console, yes. If you run BackTrack (or any other penntest flavor of linux) at home and access it through terminal on your phone, you can spoof your phone's wifi signal to broadcast as any access point that you want to emulate, the only trick is staying close enough to the target person so that their connection doesn't hop onto a real passpoint connection. In simpler words, as the attacker, you make your phone yell loud enough "I'm the real server that's closest to you, ignore all other requests", to which the target's phone does, and stays connected to you as long as you are close enough to the person. A wifi amplifier small enough to be carried in a backpack can amplify your signal enough to intercept a range of phones within your proximity, and ensure a solid connection, similar to the way portable IMSI catchers (fake cell phone towers) behave. Here's an outdated method to trick phones to connect to you by pretending to be a cell phone tower using a jammer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQSu9cBaojc&t=37m10s it's basically jamming the best available bands one after another until yours becomes the best available option... same method goes for attacking wifi (the youtube link doesn't cover wifi). When your phone becomes the best available option, it halts attacking further bands down-line to prevent further unnecessary disruption and work load.

also there's a company in New Jersey that provides this as a turn-key tool to governments and LEOs.. I have been looking for the name of it for a few hours now and can't find it, if I find it I'll update this message

but yeah, there is a reason why hackers say not to do any serious stuff online in public spaces if you don't want to be hacked or snooped on lol.
