I live in the US Virgin Islands and went through two Cat 5s in two weeks last year. AMA.

Biggest problem was water. We had a small generator, but it wasn't powering our pump when running at 120v. So, I asked a neighbor who works on pools to take a look and he rewired my pump to run on 240v and lent me some wiring to hook it up. I also had to fix that generator a few times. I ended up learning quite a bit about plumbing, electrical, and small diesel engine repair.

We basically ran the generator for a few hours in the morning while my wife got ready for work. While it was running, we recharged every battery in the house and cooled the food in the fridge. When it was all charged, I turned it off. Then, I worked on my laptop's battery with my wifi router plugged into a big-ass UPS. Our internet came back in about two weeks because it's all wireless and the ISP just had to put up some towers. When my wife came home, I turned the generator back on. We showered and splurged on our electronics until bed time. We had battery powered fans for sleeping that we recharged during the day. Unfortunately, they only lasted about five hours a charge, so I usually woke up, drenched in sweat and had to change the batteries.

It sucked at first, but became a weird routine.
