SNL doesn't work for a number of reason. Notably:

Information travels faster than ever these days thanks to the internet. So what was bleeding edge and fresh on a Monday could very well be stale and old news by the time SNL parodies it on Saturday.

The dependency on almost all skits being topical or somehow politically related is also a huge restriction. I think some of the best SNL skits of all time were in a lot of ways pointless, like Dear Sister. I guess that it's the age we're in, but it seems like every SNL skit nowadays just NEEDS to take a dig at Trump or someone at least once per scene. It's just such low hanging fruit and screams a lack of creativity.

It doesn't help that there are countless YouTubers who are essentially uploading equivalents to SNL skits, like Balloon Shop or Gus Johnson, who are far more interesting and varied and unique. Since anyone can upload their own ideas for sketch comedy, SNL has competition that, simply put, works a hell of a lot harder than them.

One final complaint, I just can't stand any of the comedians on the show... not that they're all necessarily bad entertainers, but the archetype of SNL forces them to come across as unbearable douchebags. Every time they make a joke they need to look into the camera and give some smug ass look while the """live audience""" gives some canned laughter. It's this moment, this break of the fourth wall, that particularly triggers me when watching SNL. Every actor has this air of superiority, this presence that they are just so much god damn better than you and your friends and your family, all because they happen to be on TV right now. I really don't get this vibe from any other sketch comedy shows or YouTube channel. But here's SNL, year of our lord 2018, still acting like they're the hottest shit on the block. In reality, it's a washed up program that's propped up by boomers who truly have nothing better to do than watch the same repetitive jokes, from the same writers, told by the same comedians, about the same topics as every single other week.

It's sad, it's dreary, it's downright infuriating to think that people go out of their way to watch this shit.

Just give me Kanye already.
