Liverpool official comment on the Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster in Indonisia (death toll currently at 174 as of writing this title)

You're mocking the Hillsborough disaster by comparing it to this, context matters. The police shepherded many more fans than that the section could hold. When the police lost control of the event and began acting violent the people in that space panicked and crushed each other because they were packed in like sardines due to bad event control policies.

That didn't happen here. The police didn't force everyone into a too small section of the stadium. Thousands of fans invaded the pitch because their team lost 3-2, fighting oppositional players, fighting police. This is all down to home fans rioting.

FIFA banned teargas but that's not a local law and there's no reporting that anyone in FIFA communicated that to the police anyway. Also FIFA recognizes a very violent recent history. Indonesia was banned for participating in the world cup specifically because of fan violence which wasn't lifted until 5 or 6 years ago. Riots like this don't happen in most other top flight leagues. Do you honestly believe that certain countries don't have more instances of violent top flight fans?

And the point about cops not deescalating is bullshit. the general public has a responsibility to deescalate as well. Both need to do that.
