As per usual, there is already people conflating rehabilitation and restorative justice with “releasing everybody and fuck all”. Ironically, the point of restorative justice is that a culpable individual may access its culpability and restore the damage it caused to the victim and its community, not that it sits in a cell for 10 years munching up public money and planning how it will stab someone when it leaves jail.
No one proposing a saner method of criminal justice thinks everything will be fine and dandy if it is ever instituted, only that it may reduce recidivism, save money on non-violent offenses, address actual justice to the victims and create an environment where community may deal with its offenders.
The talk about immigration is also bizarre, as Khan was a British citizen born in the UK, and yet his parents are somehow culpable for his crimes and should have been prevented from immigrate in order so they wouldn’t have a son that would eventually become a terrorist.
