In London show yesterday, Halsey wore a shirt with the photo of 'lesbian couple beaten in homophobic attack on London bus'. On its back, there is a line: "F*** your straight pride". She also made a passionate speech about the importance of LGBT+ safety and pride

Well then it's a crying shame a group has hijacked a term that should offend no one. I mean don't even think for a second that I would support or defend a hateful group like the one described - but the concept of being proud of your identity is something we should hold sacred, and what you call naive, I call a useful stance in a time where people are very eager to take sides and think in extremes. I'm a white dude and I live a very privileged life and I should consider that every second of every day - but there is a way of thinking that would shame me for my identity, and while the balance of power is different, does it really help anyone if the sub has these "ironic" anti-white and anti-straight sentiments when we're already in a world dealing with bigotry and racism?

People have dramatically jumped to conclusions about what I'm saying here and that's fine, comments on reddit will never convey fully what people mean. But as a moderator I have seen vile comments of racism and homophobia and it's been disgusting at times to read what people say to these minority groups. To then have entire threads devoted to bashing artists because they are white and straight and using hateful language towards them, is incredibly ironic, because those comments are upvoted to the high heavens more often than not. Personally I would prefer no language of that kind at all, and while that is probably naive and dumb according to some, I don't think that's a harmful philosophy at all.

I am tempted to start explaining why in my personal life I prove more than enough that I'm not some "hurr durr straight pride" guy, but that shouldn't matter here. I simply don't see why defending one group of people is so often linked with stooping down to their level.

Perhaps I was a bit misguided in posting it HERE, as Halsey is awesome and so was her speech. I guess I'm just a bit disappointed with our users sometimes who go beyond "jokes" and "irony" too often when discussing groups they perceive as powerful and in control. Do with that what you will.
