Long-Term Caribbean Cruising Advice

ok, i re-read as suggested. leaving in early summer (june) and sailing new england for a couple of months (end july/begin. aug.?) then heading south is still IMO, way to early. remember 'sandy' formed up in the end of october and absolutely crushed NJ. you talk extensively of the need for insurance. why would you risk such n early departure with a known value such as 'sandy' in your back pocket? doesn't make sense. my advice still stands, don't leave CT until late in hurricane season.

apparently we have had quite different experiences with internet connections. i'll just say that i have very good gear designed for extending my range for picking up signals. last weeks game streamed like watching TV, no buffering, herky-jerky stuff. in a word, smooth. purchase a good high quality late model lap top and a quality antennae. talk to a computer geek, i did and was pleasantly surprised at the results.

insurance? well, in nearly a quarter century as a live aboard i have seen my share of fuck ups. never anything as catastrophic as you descibe though, save hurricanes. insurance companies deem hurricanes an "act of god" to wit, hurricane claims are deemed "no fault". it was an act of god that your boat sunk mine and they (ins. co.) generally pay out to the policy holder without trying to establish negligence, act of god and all that,

general liability accidents rarely exceed a couple thousand bucks, often only a couple of hundred and even more often a hand shake and a case of beer. IMO best insurance is quality ground tackle, the majority of accidents come from dragging anchor, and excellent boat handling skills, know your vessel inside out and do proper maintenance. the rest is common sense. don't go in squally conditions, never anchor on a lee shore, etc. . . . my insurance company to this day is Beach'em and Rodes.

we can agree to disagree on a few things and that's fine, life would be boring if we all thought the same. no worries, see you across the waves,

cheers.
