Looking for something like Harry Potter, that isn't Harry Potter

I can't suggest any books but before anyone suggests it, I'll say this:

Eventually someone will arrive here and suggest name of the wind, the first book of the kingkiller chronicles. Yes, most of the book is about a kid trying to make it into a magic university and there are also chapters about his classes etc.

While it sounds great on paper and the writing (prose) is stellar, the plot is non existent and the first book does basically what the appendices in lord of the rings do. It's mostly just exposition and a male Mary Sue being the best at everything he does.

I don't know why people love it, I put myself through it one and a half times and I hate it. This is from someone who loves fantasy and reads only fantasy for the most part. So I want to save you the trouble. It is a big book and many people call it the best ever written. They even compare it to the Stormlight Archives, which is wrong. If you like Sanderson's storytelling style, you'll hate what Rothfuss did with Kingkiller chronicles.

Anyway, end of rant. Thank you if you've read through this whole thing. I had to get it off my chest.
