Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Officials Cutting $100-$150 Million From LAPD Budget, Funds To Be Reinvested In Communities Of Color

I imagine it doesnt have a large population. And definitely doesnt have a very high crime rate. Im assuming but generally police budgets span far and wide to cover budgets and equipment maintenance. Alot of the 'militarization' people address with police is retired military gear that the military sells at a loss to recoup some money. Not arguing that i support it. But people act like when they see armored military humvees with a police department slapped on the side they picture the price tag that goes with it. Your taxes still payed for that but more then likely that vehicle was bought by the military, lightly used or not at all for 5-10 years. And when the next rollout of equipment comes out rather then keep paying for its maintenance they offer it to police at a cheaper cost. I certainly dont support militarization; its unnecessary in the grand scheme when regular beat cops have to deal with pistols as their most realistic threat. That being said on the rare circumstance where someone has an automatic weapon, armor piercing rounds and body armor (rare but theirs an incident every few years) you want your swat teams prepared. Deputy So and So whos biggest job is scaring off loitering teens outside a 7-11 doesnt need a humvee with armor plating though
