I love horror media but I fucking hate sensationalist stuff about actual serial killers- it’s celebrating real life monsters. That shouldn’t be entertainment and people shouldn’t make money off it. Gross

I suspect the real issue is the pressure people feel to give life a special meaning, to be special, to be remembered

Which they seek by trying to achieve celebrity status... The zodiac killer wasn't sending those letters to the police for nothing, Ed Kemper didn't confess because he felt guilty.

There's a second harm to these things too. These guys are the posterboys for stuff for stuff like stranger-danger and satanic panic. People who propagate these stories are very much interested in building a narrative, usually a very twisted one. I can only think of this story in my country, about 20 years ago this upperclass girl killed her parents, a very isolated incident. Since then the story has been milked dry, last year they released a movie about her. Of course the narrative surrounding all of this is these "dangerous influences over our youths" or "can you imagine this happening inside your own home??!!". Of course, ignoring the fact that it was a very very isolated incident(what isn't an isolated incident is the exact opposite).
