I'm actually skeptical if this paid online will be successful. I think their might be enough people who give it a hard pass. My reasoning is pretty simple. I subscribe to PS Plus because there is a plethora of online games that I want to play. There's also new hit online games being added all the time. It feels necessary. Plus also gives out 2-4 relatively recent PS4 games per month. Xbox Gold is basically the same deal, but with great backwards compatible 360 games added into the mix.

Switch online? There isn't that plethora of games and there won't be anytime soon. A paid system will only be viable for people who are really into MK8 or Splatoon (and eventually Smash) and play it constantly.

I played MK8 online sporadically on the Wii U. I would go months without playing, so it was nice to have the available for free. Splatoon was great, but I played it for maybe a month or two before moving on. Smash was a dumpster fire so gave up on that quick.

I think a popular option on Switch will be people paying for a month or two at a time when a new game comes out or they get a urge to play MK8. Hopefully the monthly pricing is fair.
