LPT: College isn't the only way to start a good career. Apprenticeships, Trade Schools, and Military Training can be great alternatives in today's world.

Suffer. No, seriously, that's what I had to do for the past 18 years. Father made way too much money and I couldn't get loans or aid, so I built a life more myself in a dirt-cheap town, doing IT work while raising a family. I'm comfortable now with a team leadership job, but haven't had a raise in 8 years, can't find a better employer in the area, and most job applications go unanswered - largely because I don't have a degree.

Now that my kid is grown, I've got a bit more time and money to pursue the remainder of my career - but 18 years ago, people said I didn't need college to do what I wanted to do with my life. The goalposts moved, and now I can't get a new job. That's why I think the trades advice is completely foolish and shortsighted.
