LPT : If you are hiking / running / walking with someone in a worse shape than you, let them lead the way.

I was backpacking with a group through some slot canyons and there were fast walkers and slow walkers. I was the fastest, so I put myself in the middle. I would walk until the line was stretched too thin, then book it to the fast half and tell them to stop.

It was a grueling hike and a flash flood came (we were walking on a dry river bed) so our hike was forced to stop a couple of miles short of camp.

fortunately, the girl who was impatient and pushing the pace got tired of stopping and went exploring up the Mesa. She saw the flash flood before we could hear it, and we were all able to get to high ground before it hit. It was an amazing day.

Since we were still relatively compact, the communication between the front and back was still intact. A couple of us had to go back and carry the packs of the two slowest who were completely exhausted and parked under a tree. Walking back along the newborn river completely changed the Utah landscape.
