LPT Request: How to not speak in a monotone voice

Right as I entered puberty, I developed an abnormally high pitched voice for a male. It held me back severely because, and I am not exaggerating this, I sounded like tweety bird. Suffice to say the bullying and laughing was extreme. Luckily my parents realized this was radically and negatively on all fronts and took me to an amazing speech pathologist.

One of the best and most immediate exercises you can do for a monotone pitched voice (regardless if your monotone is low or high pitched) is to...

  • Stand up straight, like if you were in the military. Shoulder's back, chest out.

  • Make a fist with one hand and cup that fist with your other hand.

  • While holding that cupped fist, place both your hands just above your belly button but below where your rib cage starts. You are aiming for your diaphragm muscles with this position.

  • Now, start talking. Pick a long speech from a movie or a song. "Mary Had A little Lamb" or anything that you have memorized.

-On the first syllable of every word, press in with your hands toward your diaphram. It will cause you to expel extra air out as you say the word you are speaking.

Notice the difference? You are forcing yourself to speak in a non-monotone manner. Repeat this exercise daily for 5 minutes. Then, for a few minutes after, try to recreate the effect of you pressing in with your fist, but without your fist doing anything of course.

Finally, if your monotone is very severe, consider talking to speech pathologist. Local universities often have speech pathology programs and can point you in the right direction, and sometimes offer diagnostic or evaluation services for free.
