LPT Request: People Who are Happy and Successful with their Career / Degree how Did you Choose Correctly?

So I went to visit schools senior year. I went to go visit art schools as I was dead set on being an artist. When I visited the school I asked everyone I could talk to what their plans were and what job they had lined up,.

As you might of guessed, 'none', 'no idea' etc. Where very common answers, after about the 10th anwser I decided to leave the campus tour and reevaluate my plans. So I decided to go the community college route. Cheap, inexpensive and can live at home.

After putt putting around and no idea what I wanted to do, jumped from major to major for the first few semesters. I finallu took a math class and it was hard as fuck. So I choose the hardest thing I could find with math, so I choose physics.

Upon leaving community college and going to a 4 year institution. I figured just continue on with physics and do your undergraduate work in physics. However when I went to visit prospective schools, namely the school I really wanted to go to, the line to visit the physics teachers/facilities was a 2 hour wait.

I said fuck that and found the shortest line I could. It was for Ceramics Engineering, so jumped in line and took the tour. I was exposed to all sorts of neat equipment, SEMs, TEMs, AFM, XRD, PLD, CVD. You name it, they had it.

Upon starting work on that degree, I realized what i really wantes to do, was play with really expensive scientific instrumentation. I finished up that degree and was going to start working for a company, had a job offer.

I turned down the job offer and decided to stick with it and applied to graduate schools. I some how managed to get into a program for the same major as my Undergrad degree doing similar research I had done in my Undergrad degree. So I get more time to use fancy instruments!

Honestly though I'm really considering making a move into another field. Not that I'm no happy or don't enjoy it. But once I got published and got a patent I was like well I've made my contributions what other jobs can I conquer next.
