LPT: When interviewing for a job, when asked the salary question, turn that back around on the interviewer (nicely)!

More effective for me has been to defer salary questions until later. Politely but firmly them your salary is negotiable during the interview. Do not disclose your salary history.

The point of the interview is to get an offer. Talking about salary before they make an offer can only lead to being rejected ... before they make an offer.

You want to negotiate pay at the offer stage. Thats when you have the leverage. Think about it. An offer means that you are the top candidate for the job. The company wants you. And they have put their cards on the table in the form of an offer.

If the offer is low, politely explain to them what compensation you would need in order to accept. The majority of hiring managers plan for this and will have additional budget to increase their offer for the right candidate.

Think about it, if the company doesn’t make a deal with you then they miss out on their top choice. And may even have to start the hiring process all over.
