LPT: When leaving a job, especially one you've been at for a while, do it in a way that would always allow you to come back even if you don't think you'll ever need it.

I know its insanely petty and may very well never result in any positive outcome for you, but it theoretically is a great way to demonstrate your value to a company that isnt recognizing it.

I.e., maybe his boss said "you barely do anything around here it would work just fine without you" so he decides to just leave one day just to illustrate how vital they are. I mean what can better demonstrate how central one is to an operation than to simply remove any trace of oneself, and leave everything else as is.

I guess, theoretically, previously your employer mightve genuinely believed you contributed nothing, and wouldve never respected or recommended you had he not done that and left documentation when he quit. Now that you leave, theyre forced to accept that you actually did do SOMETHING because its very clear when things start breaking down, and when you ask for a recommendation a year he gives it cause he now accepts that you were actually serving a purpose back there. Thats one theory for why that could be a behavior that evolution has allowed to persist.
