LPT: When someone is going through a difficult time and is sharing it with you, don't talk about similar problems you're having as a way to relate. Instead, just listen.

This is why I hate talking to my family about anything I do or am going through. All I ever get is, 'well back in 1962' responses. My grandparents are so out of touch with modern life that it isn't even funny and trying to explain to them that minimum wage then is like making $22/h these days is pointless. Gas and milk should always be a nickel a gallon and rent on a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house on an acre of land with a 2 car garage and a pool should be about $100/month in their minds and if you pay more than that, they think it's your fault and you shouldn't make more because anything costs more than what it used to. They think they had it rough at their first unskilled labor jobs that paid today's equivalent of $45/h.
