Lucky day. A box of my grandfathers 78 records ranging from 1935-1945 (when he left for the war). Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Ink Spots, and more. Always happy to look at pre-war records.

Although there are dedicated mono cartridges out there for 78s, many cartridges have the 3 mil stylus available. Pfanstiehl tends to use "D3" to indicate a 3 mil stylus, and "D7" for a 0.7 mil stylus for their aftermarket styli.

The cheapest option is to get an Audio-Technica AT-3600 or a Numark Groovetool (MG09D), while the popular AT95e also has an aftermarket 3 mil stylus available.

Vintage cartridges such as the Pickering V-15/Stanton 500, Pickering XV-15/Stanton 681, Shure M75 (and variants) tend to have aftermarket 78rpm styli available.

If going for the existing cartridge route, do remember to hit the mono switch on your receiver, or you can simply use a Y adapter to bridge the left and right channels together from the phono preamp's output.
