Luke Prokop statement on NHL pride night controversies lately

Let’s not lose sight of the big picture. This whole latest incident was a massive win for the Hockey Is For Everyone supporters, which I consider myself to be one.

Reimer did what he did and made his statement. While I took him at his word and respect everyone’s beliefs, I didn’t consider it to be the right move. And it is apparent a lot of others didn’t either.

It brought about a good discourse, the point of which is marginalized groups need support from the community at large. This whole thing allowed the Hockey is for Everyone community to explain once again why it is important. For those of us that think it is, the whole incident turned out to be a positive. Here, Prokop as someone directly effected gets to make a comment about how support is needed and that support is not endorsement.

This message is aimed at people that might be able to be convinced support is the right way. It is a smart message.

There are people that will change their minds and people that never will. You never get anywhere with people that won’t; all you can do to them is the same hectoring and namecalling they do. That’s wrong, too, and counterproductive. So take the high road and work on the people we can change. We’ll get better results. And over time, maybe others will soften their hearts to the struggles of others.
