I’m an Independent Contractor. This company wants me to waste a day of unpaid time and gas to attend pointless meetings. The compensation they offer is half a Subway sandwich.

I sometimes do contracting for a field with only a few specialists in it. (right now im FTE) Pretty much only a handful of us around here with my specialty. My contract rate is fairly high. When I'm sent a meeting request, I do something similar.

"Which department do I bill this time to?" while always including the person who knows what they are paying for my time. Gets me out of stupid long meetings and team building exercises all the time.

A story: one time I attended a mandatory all day meeting. There were several highly paid consultants forced to attend the meeting. We all looked around and chuckled because that meeting probably cost the company 10 grand in consultant fees. It was not anything of importance, but the c-suite insisted that we attend. That place threw money around like crazy. Fun times to be a consultant.
