I’m Astead W. Herndon, a national political reporter for The New York Times. I spent 3 months reporting on the Sunrise Movement, a group of young climate activists trying to push Democrats to the left ahead of the 2020 election. Ask me anything.

It's unfortunate that he didn't answer my question. I knew the answer before I asked the question and, I suspect, he avoided answering because the real world impact of the GND doesn't fit his narrative of US = bad.

It is unfortunate but the US simply cannot just stop relying on fossil fuels. Our economy would completely collapse. How would we transport goods? How would we launch satellites? How would global trade commence? What would power our schools, hospitals, or daycares? What would syringes be made of, or defibrillators, or even baby formula bottles?

There would be massive unemployment and fatalities. Oh, and by the way, as per typical US politics the GND now has numerous additional provisions like free healthcare, free college, and reparations for slavery. How the hell would we pay for that if we're all unemployed or dead?

The biggest problem is if tomorrow the US completely stopped emitting pollutants many other countries won't so the problem persists. It would make about as much sense as having a non-chlorinated section of a swimming pool.
