I’m painting a room a deep red color. I primed beforehand. The first coat of red looks absolutely awful. Blotchy and uneven. Is this typical for a deep color? Should I wait for coat 2 to deal out? Photo inside.

First off, I am not a painting pro. I am just a person that has painted a few rooms and have learned a couple lessons on the way. This is just one person's take.

Did you prime, clean and sand the wall first? I ask because there are some very light areas that look like they soaked moisture unevenly out of the new paint layer. If not, just remember to do so the next time you paint a room.

Is the roller cover nap correct for the paint you are using? Check the label on the paint can and make sure you have the right thickness of roller cover for the paint you are using. Spending the few extra dollars for the better roller covers has made a noticeable difference for me.

It looks like you are using W patterns to apply the paint. I have had much better success with painting up and down, from floor to ceiling, overlapping half the roller width each time. Not doing W patterns over the whole wall. A lot of home how to shows preach the W pattern technique, but it does not come out as well for me.

This site has some tips that have helped me get better results, especially learning to do a smoothing pass.
