I’m Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, and I ran for president in the 2020 Democratic Primary. I'm currently working to help elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris--and here to answer your questions about running for president, working with the campaign, and the 2020 election. AMA!

Hi Pete -

As a moderate democrat, mainly due to my views on the importance of pragmatic legislation, I was very disappointed at the angry and divisive rhetoric that took over this forum during the primary season.

As someone who was often targeted for being too moderate, or too corporate during the primary race, and having experienced the intense and often ugly partisanship that not only exists between republicans and democrats but between the idealogical wings of each party as well, do you think there is any way to 'repair' the way we speak to each other in politics? Do you think this super-partisan, hate-filled dialogue is here to stay? Or do you think there are some strategies for far-left democrats, moderate dems, centrists, and center-leaning republicans to have a a more healthy conversation without it always playing to the extremes?

Also - You had my support from the get-go and I hope to eventually have the opportunity to work for / volunteer for a future campaign of yours. Pete 2028! (or maybe 2024?)! Looking forward to seeing you here in DC soon!
