I’m as progressive as the next guy but I really hate the updated pride flag. Smashes too many elements into one thing. More in comments.

I am not trans, so I cannot speak on behalf of how trans people feel about their colours being integrated.

However as a BIPOC queer, I will refuse to fly any flag with the brown or black stripes. When first introduced at Philadelphia Pride 2017, both colours were meant to represent ‘people of colour who have often been ignored by the queer community’. Retroactively, they have changed the black stripe to represent those we lost to HIV/AIDS.

As a person of colour who’s had to simultaneously deal with homophobia from my community and racism from queer people, the assumption that a brown stripe is ANYTHING is textbook Buzzfeed progressivism, and a reminder that symbolic changes are valued significantly more than actual changes.

If I was trans, I’d reject this flag for the same reasons too. Instead of addressing the transphobia that plagues the Queer community, they’d rather just add the colours and move on with it. However, like I said, I am not trans so I cannot speak on behalf of how they feel. But as a Queer BIPOC, I know how I feel about the brown and black staining my rainbow pride.
