(MA) Health insurance company refusing to process claim because I have supplemental insurance

That's not true. Here is the exact wording from the relevant section of my plan. They cannot deny a claim because I did not provide information about the other insurance. They can only deny it if they determine that the other insurance would have covered part of the bill.

I've only done this a few times. And both times it was when neither plan would have ended up covering anything because we had not met the deductibles (and didn't plan to that year). However, one insurance had a pre-negotiated patient responsibility that was about $1k lower than the other plan.

So no, it's not strictly required, but you have to be intelligent about it.
