Regarding Hachiman from Oregairu he always was meant to be relatable but I don't think he was meant to be someone to look up to as "yeeah he's so right."

His apathetic and cynical self was mostly him justifying his own loneliness and looking down on others for being superficial. As the story goes on, he comes to care for the two girls and its mostly him becoming more human, realizing how hard it is to care for someone and coming to terms with the hardships of maintaining intimate and genuine relationships. In fact majority of the second season is him running away from his own issues, and you come to realize he's always been doing that from day 1.
