I have some brown friends and to my knowledge they have never had a bad experience here because they stood out, though I had a black friend that was followed around by all the middle school girls for like a week when he first moved here 15 years ago.

I have some white family members that have married Jamaicans as well as some Indians and they say Maine is pretty nice about race. Down in Virginia/the Carolinas they have gotten rude comments and some questionable behavior but as far as I know they find people here nice and welcoming.

Not saying bad things don't happen, but I'd imagine the small minority of Maine racists to be quiet and go about their business.

While LePage is a terrible poster-boy for the whole thing I think the lack of diversity is more about geography/circumstance than any sort of hostility on the part of Maine people. Maybe I'm a naive idiot though, and as a white guy I'm probably like the absolute worst and most uniformed person to have an opinion on this subject.
