Major depressive disorder is thought to be caused by a decrease in the number and flexibility of neural synapses. Researchers found that one psychedelic dose of psilocybin in pigs increased the number of synapses and made serotonin signaling more effective

I have minor depression and I tried it a few months ago. I took 3.5 grams and had a terrible experience. Scary, dark and twisted. At one point I was stuck in a loop of remembering and forgetting that I existed, and every time I briefly had self awareness I believed that I was doomed to be in that loop for eternity. Other parts I would liken to the feeling of the Uzumaki manga horror series (google it if you haven't seen it), though I didn't make that connection at the time.

I was with someone who I trusted and in a safe place. Since a couple days afterward I'd say there has been absolutely no long term effect on the way I think. Which I guess is good considering how well it went.
