Majority of Canadians support stiff healthcare fines for unvaccinated: poll

It’s as if you can’t differentiate between a reasonable and unreasonable number, and are more interested in getting worked up about hypotheticals that do not exist. Why not a MILLION dollars for a chocolate bar? Why not a TRILLION dollars for a soda?

Because the whole point of these kind of taxes is to recoup costs that individuals are would otherwise be unfairly passing off to the rest of us and, within reason, incentivize decision making. It’s the same reason why the fine for remaining unvaccinated won’t be a quintillion dollars. So, interestingly, you have actually hit on the point. Cigarettes and alcohol ARE still affordable - and so will being unvaccinated. Hence why (as you have deftly noted) everyone compares this policy to a tax on other products.

To your point about “leading to social unrest” - you are correct that 100 less 60 is 40. However, policy decisions in this country aren’t going to be held hostage by vague threats coming from 10% of the population. The rest of us are: i) able to think critically, ii) tired of subsidizing the anti-vax movement, and iii) capable of understanding that a small fine to recoup disproportionate expenses is fair and reasonable in circumstances where, by design, no individual is going to be arbitrarily punished.
