Why do the majority of Puerto Ricans prefer American integration over independence?

As it is currently, the island exists in an unsustainable political and legal limbo. “Estado Libre Asociado” is essentially a nonsense term that the Supreme Court came up with, no other place on earth exists under the same name. Consequently, there are two possible paths forward from this limbo existence: independence or statehood. The moral question then is what would be best for the average resident of the island? At this point, in 2020, with climate change and social unrest becoming greater and greater sociopolitical forces, coupled with endemic corruption problems that have plagued the island forever, statehood is honestly their best bet. Going it alone would be a recipe for disaster.
