this makes my blood boil

I'm from Germany but have been living in the US for a while so I guess I have both sides of the story.

Honestly, the quality of life in Germany is much, much better than the US, and I'm not just talking about "free" stuff. Nicer infastructure, more clean energy and recycling programs, much better and healthier food, and the country and culture themselves are just much nicer places to be. All of those things come at a price, however, and that price is an oh-my-god level of taxes. For example, the German government literally hits with a monthly TV tax, based on how many TVs you have in your house. The US also has a pinch more personal freedom, as in Germany freedom of speech is limited and gun rights are almost nonexistent. I'm also not sure how with our massive population and debt if we could afford the stuff Germany has, even with tax increases, which I'm not exactly in favor of.
