Setting your makeup just means to lock it in place. You could use a powder on top of a liquid to set it, or just use a setting spray. Usually, people still set liquid/cream products with powder before using a setting spray, so more often than not it means using a powder to kind of lock it in place.

Using powder to set is kind of like when you add a small amount of flour to water, the water dries down and isn’t as slippy. :) Any powder will do. You could set cream blush with powder blush, for example. Theoretically, even Johnsons baby powder will work to set your powder. However, keep in mind different kinds of powders have different ingredients and thus help longevity in different ways. (I was going to geek out about kinds of powders in this comment but it’s long enough as is, so let me know if you want to read about that and I’ll put it in another comment)p.)

If you put a setting spray on top of your makeup, it forms a film in order to keep the makeup looking its best for a longer period of time. This helps prevent color from fading/makeup from breaking down and it helps a bit with creasing.

Is the creasing right around the nostril or in the nasolabial fold (the lines running diagonal from your nose area to your lips)?

If you have darkness or redness around your nostrils that you’re trying to conceal and you have a powder foundation, I recommend putting just a small amount of liquid foundation and then going in with powder foundation instead of concealer. This cuts down the number of products used and provides the same amount of coverage.

If you don’t have a powder foundation, then try this:

  1. Blot your sunblock/excess skincare sitting in the area
  2. Apply your foundation and let the foundation settle in while you do your brows or eye makeup
  3. Blot the foundation with one ply of tissue. Smooth out any creases that are showing up about now.
  4. Pat powder in. :) I recommend pressing powder in around the nostrils so as to maintain the coverage, and using a fluffy brush/light dusting for powdering the nasolabial folds.

Keep in mind that your nasolabial folds are a feature of your face. This area moves a lot so don’t be too hard on yourself if you notice some creasing after a few hours! Just pat in/smooth creasing with a finger, blot, and apply a light dusting of powder again. I don’t recommend too much powder in this area because more powder could mean more creasing .Too much flour (powder) on water (foundation) = sticky cakey mess.
