The Making of Donkey Kong Country (2018) details how a prolific British developer rebooted one of the most famous game characters of all time, and reinvented their own company in the process.

Honestly, looking back... MAN, I would have loved working at Rare in the 90s.

For sure. Comparable to Atari in their wild glory days, or Pixar while hacking away on Toy Story.

If you haven't gone down the rabbit hole reading about the development of Goldeneye, you absolutely should. It was like, an extremely small handful of guys essentially throwing spaghetti at the wall. The N64 wasn't out yet; they didn't even have a dev test kit (for a loooooooong time) and they didn't even know what the fuck the N64 would actually be able to do once it was finished. The game wasn't supposed to include multiplayer at all. If I recall, they basically shoved it down Nintendo's throat at the last minute by developing it pretty much in secret and throwing them the almost finished result shortly before release. The small shit cannot be understated either, for example the unarmed hand slapping was supposed to be a legit non-derpy karate chop but the devs thought it looked too hilarious to "fix". Heroes.
