Man kills twin teen daughters, shoots wife in both legs, then tells her to "live and suffer" before killing himself.

I didn't mean to excuse the behavior, but to point out that human behavior does not occur in a vacuum. Environmental and internal influences effect every decision we make. It is likely he was not in a healthy mental state at the time of the crime, and was likely unwell for sometime. Maybe if he had be given treatment and resources to cope with any mental illness things would not have happened the way they did. I'm not sure I see the connection you're making between someone avoiding treatment because of increased awareness and action towards mental healthcare. I guess I'm trying to say that when we stop categorizing people into either good or bad, and realize that the human brain is a complex and misunderstood structure that needs pretty precise homeostasis of chemical levels and neurotransmissions to function healthily, we will as a society progress in our understanding of ourselves and others. People in a mental health crisis do not make rational choices. Hopefully with increased awareness of the symptoms of mental illness, decreased stigma towards diagnoses, and widely available resources and accessible treatment crime rates will go down and we will see a more stable, healthy society as a result.
