Man who harassed woman in Puerto Rican T-shirt now facing hate crime charges

I agree that the man was definitely acting threatening, and that behaving in that same manner towards a police officer would be treated very seriously, but I just think two felonies and a hate crime is over the top for this.

I think harassment, and maybe trespassing would be enough. But heck, I got physicslly assaulted by someone in a way that left me concussed and bruised, and they didn’t get charged as badly as this dude, who didn’t verbally threaten or physically harm anyone. It seems like politics played a part in the severity of these charges.

And can’t this possibly work against the movement to reduce police violence? By accepting this, aren’t we admitting that walking aggressively at someone and/or yelling in their face can be considered not just a crime, but a serious crime with intent to harm? Doesn’t that then justify the police using aggressive force against an unarmed (minority?) person who is behaving aggressively towards them, but hasn’t actually gotten physical? Just a thought.
