Mandrake ward The end of map awareness as the extermination of junglers

Do you want to be recognized as a skillful player because your peripheral vision is amazing and so you looked at the lower right hand of the corner of your screen once every 6 seconds? Or do you want to be congratulated as a player because you looked at an imperfect map and accurately guessed, based on previous behavior and characters exactly what the opponent was going to try to do?

In all honesty, I believe the greatest skill comes with how one interprets all information that is available at any given time and transforms that into their decision making. It takes skill to consciously check the information the minimap presents to you and balance that with focusing on your immediate gameplay. If you fixate on your gameplay too much, you lose the info the minimap gives. If you fixate on the minimap, you lose your actual play-making and farming abilities. It is a very good skill to find the optimal balance between these extremes.

It is about learning to use all information available. You don't need peripheral vision either. It is about establishing an HUD scan such that you can recognize different situations. If you fixate on the main game and neglect looking at the minimap, you naturally deserve to lose that information. So I disagree with the notion that the minimap is simply testing peripheral vision.

Think of it like you are driving a car with a gps (and you have no idea where you are going). The gps provides a lot of information such as upcoming traffic... information that you may use to alter your course. Of course the majority of the time, you want to pay attention to the road. But every so often, you very briefly take your attention off the road to look at the gps and interpret your navigation information. Even though driving is mostly about watching other traffic, controlling your speed, etc. navigation is still a necessary part of driving, much like watching your vision is still a part of playing League of Legends
