Manufacturing Engineer - How much responsibility should a new grad be taking on?

My job description says I should be Creating, managing and updating MOM's/BOM's in Epicor, as well as creating visual work instructions for production. (Fairly basic entry level position)

What I'm currently doing on top of all that:

  • Solidworks designs for fixtures
  • Implementing + Validating ECN's of 3 product lines (It would be nice to have more people since I only fully know 1 production line, while my supervisor has been taking care of the other 2)
  • Managing the materials for robot builds (100+ parts) This involves picking parts and finding any part shortages. Something pretty common due to engineering ordering things without letting inventory or manufacturing people know. (Once I optimize pick list in Epicor this job will be passed on to inventory people)
  • And then anything that helps production they will come to me or my supervisor on small improvements they want to see or technical questions

That's exactly what's happening right now! My supervisor has tons of experience and calls out engineers and management every time they do poor practices but they still ignore his complaints, hence him quitting.

  1. I for sure plan to start gauging the market soon, but I do want a few more months experience after things settle down. Job hunting is hard enough for a new grad so more experience will definitely be a plus.

  2. My supervisor's boss already knows all the concerns but he doesn't have a good grasp on what we do here so nothing really gets done to help us out (he's also new to the company and started 1 month before me)

  3. Yeah for sure plan to let him know soon. He's still informing everyone and has a few more weeks here so once he does that I'll sit down and talk to him
