Why do so many atheists seem disinterested in Ethics

You may again argue that compassion is an objective value, which can stand on its own without religion, but where is the evidence of this?

What about all the tribes of people who care about eachother despite not even having a word for religion? Pretty sure their mothers still cared about them and their elders still tried to make things work for everyone just like we did before we came up with religions. Compassion is practically an instinctual animalistic trait that any social species exhibits, to think it started with religion is just insane.
