Why do many people see LGBTQ+ support as political?

The last few years have ushered in a much larger amount of social change than has been seen in recent memory. In 2008 the US elected a president who opposed same sex marraige and yet during his second term it became the law of the land to fanfare and dancing in the streets.
Many americans may think things are changing too fast or feel left out. Others use the denial of reconition to other groups and causes as a form of identity politics promoting their own groups.
Others still oppose same sex marriage, as an example in my beloved Missouri a county was lowering their flag to half staff to 'mourn' marraige equality, until recently.
