do many people really know what they want to do for life, when they're only 16/18?

I certainly wasn't told to prep for a career at primary school. I don't think it's at all uncommon to know exactly what you want to do.

I've never really known until now, and I'm...double the age of 18yr olds.

I went to uni and did a degree which although it was good (subject, uni, grade), it wasn't prep for a particular career.

I drifted quite a lot through my early to late 20s, but I never really agonised over it, I just got on with it.

Fell into helping vulnerable people from my late 20s (homeless, prisoners, ex-offenders, etc.) and have undertaken some really fulfilling (and often quite wild!) jobs. Been doing this line of work for almost 10 years now.

I have a place to go back to uni in September to train as a mental health nurse. The good thing is, I can still undertake casual work with one of the many orgs and agencies I've worked for, so I can top up my student finance, and won't be broke.

Post-qualification, I'd like to practice in a prison. I live very close to a well-known secure psych facility. But I'm going to keep an open mind, and see where it takes me.
