As many problems as we have as a country, can we just take a minute to appreciate that we aren't dealing with the shit show that's happening down south?

I don't. I like that the senate is appointed for life, and not elected. They're not pandering to public sentiment. They have no one to appease means they can make hard choices without partisan politics.

The problems are that because they are unaccountable they don't do much good. But thats because itbecame a crony reward of the prime minister's.

I like Trudeau's approach. A council found worthy citizens from all walks of life, shortlisted 5 per senate seat, and the PM chose from amoungst them. He also kicked all the liberal senators out of the liberal caucus.

Some of the Conservative ones followed suit. A good sign.

The senate is no longer a rubberstamp for the prime minister, but the independent "sober second thought" it was meant to be.

As for accountability, they're developing in house systems. It's reforming. For the better I think. Without it the prime minister has no oversight or limits. The senate becomes our last defense against getting completely fucked over by an asshole PM with a majority. But only if it's independent of the government.
