Good story. My favorite moment so far was probably another VIP mission but this one was a rescue.

So, it's one of the missions where you have to get a VIP out of a truck, I spawn pretty close to the vehicle and my concealed squad hops there way up a building. I notice a muton and a viper down below just hanging out, but no big deal I think I'll just sneak around them and hit them from behind.

While still concealed, I send my specialist out to hack the door open, and then move all my troops down off the building on the other side, save for my sniper who stays up top. Because I don't want to run into any nastier parties, I put everyone on overwatch for the next round.

The aliens take their turn and the fucking muton and viper come up the ladder, I was not expecting this, so they've flanked my sniper and the muton runs in for a melee kill. As the muton jumps on the skylight to run over my sniper takes a reaction shot, and misses. BUT he shatters the skylight under the muton which causes him to fall down through the building right in front of my squad.

Next turn we polish them off and go grab the VIP. Turns out the lack of aliens in the mission was not luck, but just poor placement, a stun lancer and a mec are reveiled in the building across the street from the muton incident, and a Codex, and some more advent troops are behind the van. To make matters worse, now that I have secured the VIP a pod is dropping in next turn. I don't even try to fight, I start dashing all my troops to evac.

Thankfully, they are all within striking distance on the next turn and I am able to get away. Except for one. I had to send my ranger through a building because he was too far away and he is stuck inside. Everyone starts closing in, the mec and advent troopers are taking shots at him, the Codex teleports around the back and goes into overwatch, I try think I'll have to take the risk and go for the dash, until the stun lancer comes up to me and stuns him, disorienting him and taking half his movement points.

He was captured.

Shortly after this I lost that campaign
