Deep down probably most people don't actually believe in God, let a lone the Christian faith. Their faith is nothing more than just hopium and a way of coping with uncertainty, as well as just being superstitious and hedging their bets just in case. That's why they only offer meaningless thoughts and prayers and none of these people will actually pray for something concrete that's clearly impossible because they know prayer doesn't actually solve anything. Their belief is no different than a sports fan who "believes" that performing a certain ritual will help their favorite team win, logically they know it's ridiculous, but they do it anyway because it makes them feel better.
